Turn the Villain of Algae Blooms into a Hero!
Congratulations to ASC Peer Tutor Nhi Nguyen! Their team's collaboration with Retriever Essentials is an award-winning idea to turn algae blooms into a global food source!
Nhi and her team were the second runner-up for the nationwide Wilbur-Ellis Innovation Award and then won at the Idea and Innovation Challenge at UMBC Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Back in the Spring of 2023, Nhi collaborated with the Retriever Essentials to propose the idea of using halophytic algae to bio-desalinate brackish and saltwater into freshwater and using its biomass for dealing with food insecurity. Nhi got this idea when thinking about the algal bloom under the effect of climate change, which is really amazing because we could turn something negative into something very beneficial for human life.
