A Series Honoring First-Generation College Graduates

Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates!
In honor of May graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words:

Iliana Gonzalez - B.A. in Psychology, Minor in Entrepreneurship

I am proud to be a first generation Hispanic female graduating with a bachelors. My mother and father have supported me in completing my degree.

Post-Grad Plans: I plan on finding a job placement where I can work to help communities in need.

Nowshin Ahmed - B.A. in Political Science

It means a huge accomplishment for me, this is a moment that paves the way for many of the young women in my family and the future to come. My mom and my fiancé have always been my rock throughout this journey.

Post-Grad Plans: I would love to go to law school and become an activist for human rights across the world.

Dina Ettehad - B.A. in Biology, Minor in Music

I have grown up in a family that was not allowed to continue their education in their own country simply because they are Baha'i. I am so blessed to be able to come to the states where I can continue my education and walk the path that they never have given the chance to walk. My parents and my brother the most supportive people in my whole life.

Post-Grad Plans: I would like to apply for Towson PA program and become a Physican Assistant.

Wendy Miranda - B.A. in Psychology

Graduating from UMBC as a First Gen College Student means everything to me, as I not only fulfill my dream, but also my parents dream. I truly appreciate the Early Childhood Education department as they supported and guided me through this journey. I also appreciate my parents and my boyfriend, along with his family for being there for me since day 1.

Post-Grad Plans: Post-graduation plans are to remain at my current job helping make a difference, while keeping my options open.

Roshae Roberts - B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

I feel blessed to be graduating from UMBC as a First Gen College Student. There were times when I didn't believe that this could ever happen, so I'm glad that I was able to help other first gen students along the way via the First Gen Mentoring Program. I am grateful to be reaching this milestone, and I know I have made my family proud!
