Spanish SI PASS with Jack Wheaton!
Part of our "Get to Know" series for Tutor Appreciation Week
Buenos dias, Retrievers!
I hope you're enjoying National Tutor Appreciation Week as much as we are! We are in the middle of our Get to Know series (because what better way to appreciate our tutors, SI PASS leaders, and peer mentors than by getting to know them?) and we've got a special highlight for you! Today, we're getting to know Jack Wheaton, an SI PASS leader for SPAN 102!
SPAN 102? There's SI PASS for SPAN 102? Absolutely! It's brand new for this semester, so please take advantage of it!
Now, let's get to know Jack!
Tell us a little about yourself!
I'm a computer science major and I am in my 4th year of college. I was enrolled in an online high school, which is where I started to learn Spanish. I took two Spanish courses at UMBC; I am really glad I did because learned way more than I expected to!
Tell us about how you are involved on campus.
I am an SI PASS leader for Spanish 102 at UMBC. I lead two 50-minute sessions per week in addition to 2-hour exam reviews before exams.
How and why did you get involved in being an SI PASS leader?
My Spanish professor, Señora Maria Manni recommended me to be an SI PASS leader. I did some research into what SI PASS was all about and immediately jumped on the opportunity!
What is your favorite thing about being an SI PASS leader?
My favorite part of being an SI PASS leader is helping people learn in a friendly and relaxed environment. I find it amazing that people are able to learn so much just by working together.
Why should students utilize the SI PASS sessions?
SI PASS sessions encourage you to think in ways you may not have before. They promote working together and sharing knowledge to further students' understanding of various topics. They also help most students become much more successful in the relevant class(es)!
How should students prepare for a SI PASS session?
It would be beneficial for students to prepare any questions they want answered or are simply just curious about. Questions are always welcome! We usually work on current class topics, but I try to work students' questions into the session itself if possible.
You can find Jack leading his SPAN 102 SI PASS Sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 to 11:50 a.m. in Sherman Hall A wing Room 121.
Jack is another one of our great tutors and SI/PASS leaders we are highlighting during National Tutor Appreciation Week, and we appreciate him hablando español con nosotros. Remember to follow us on myUMBC to see more in our Get to Know series!
