Get to Know a Tutor!

Writing Center Edition

We're back! I hope you've all had a wonderful Spring Break! Ours was full of fun, sun, and...snow. But I suppose that's par for the course with Maryland weather.

Anyway, it's back to work for everyone, including our tutors! Our Appointment Tutoring, Math Lab, and Writing Center are still up and running. To celebrate, have another installment of Get to Know a Tutor!!

Our second profiled tutor works at the Writing Center. From Owings Mills, MD, here's Lulu Akintola!

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you’re studying.

My name is Lulu and I'm currently studying Psychology with a minor in Korean. Fun fact: I taught myself Korean so that I could test into 300 level and skip the basic courses.

How industrious! Are you involved with any other clubs, projects, or organizations on campus besides the Writing Center?

I'm the Treasurer of the newly approved cooking club, The Culinary Unification Project. I'm a research assistant in Dr. Cheah's Culture, Child, and Adolescent Lab. I'm also a resident assistant in Patapsco Hall, and I'm an NRHH member.

You're all over campus! So how long have you been tutoring?

Let's see; I took the ENGL 395 course the spring semester of my freshman year, so this is my 7th semester as a writing tutor.

How did you get involved with tutoring?

My freshman year, I was talking to my neighbor across the hall from me about AP classes in High School and I mentioned that I AP'd out of ENGL 100, and he suggested I send a sample essay to the director of the Writing Center at the time, and she offered me a spot in the internship course.

And the rest is history, as they say. So, what’s your favorite thing about tutoring?

I like the feeling of knowing that I have helped someone improve something about themselves, even if its only their writing.

What do you recommend students bring with them when they attend your sessions?

In addition to two preferably printed copies of their writing, a smile and a can-do attitude; if the tutee doesn't want to be there, neither will I, and the quality of the session will suffer for it.

If you would like help with your papers, Lulu will be in the Writing Center Monday through Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
