Tri Alpha is a national honor society for first-generation college students that connects you with mentorship and professional development opportunities to help you build connections with peers and professionals! National First-Gen College Celebration Week

Colorful flyer titled “First Generation Week | November 3–7, 2025” featuring UMBC’s black and gold branding. The flyer lists daily events celebrating first-generation college students: • Monday, November 3 – Kickoff, 9 AM, Commons Main Street: Celebrate First-Gen pride with giveaways and community. • Tuesday, November 4 – Good Morning Commons: First Gen Edition, 8:30 AM, Commons Sports Zone. Later that day, Fireside Chat at 4 PM, Fireside Lounge: Students, faculty, and staff share First-Gen experiences. • Wednesday, November 5 – Let’s Talk Grad School, 12 PM, SOND 101: Learn about preparing for graduate school as a First-Gen student. • Thursday, November 6 – Networking Event, 4 PM, Commons Sports Zone: Connect with First-Gen faculty, staff, and alumni. • Friday, November 7 – Celebration, 11 AM, Commons Main Street: Close out the week with music and community. Hosted by Academic Opportunity Programs and Student Affairs Success Initiatives.

A full week of programs, including the First-Gen Faculty & Staff Recognition Breakfast, visibility campaigns, student panels, and social media storytelling.

 

 

Cap and Cords

Graduation Cord Distribution:

Graduating First-Gen students are honored with a First-Gen recognition cord and invited to share their reflection via social media platforms, allowing them to celebrate this milestone with family, peers, and staff. Cords are blue and green, signifying

 

 

Retriever Graduate Preparation Network

Hosted by the McNair Scholars Program and the Graduate School to help First-Gen students explore and prepare for graduate education.

First-Gen Fridays

Starting in Spring 2026, monthly events that rotate between social gatherings, skill-building workshops, and faculty/student panels. Topics will include navigating campus life, exploring identity, and accessing high-impact opportunities like research and study abroad.
